Rohit Sharma

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has reached number two in the ICC ODI rankings. Let us tell you about this news in detail

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has reached number two in the ICC ODI rankings. 38-year-old Rohit gained one place in the latest update released on August 13, while he has not played any international match since the IPL 2025 season. His progress was also due to the poor performance of Pakistan’s Babar Azam, who has recently slipped to third place after a weak performance against the West Indies.

Now Rohit is just one place behind Shubman Gill. Rohit has 756 points, 28 points less than Gill’s 784 points, while Babar is in third place with 751 points. Former India captain Virat Kohli is currently at the fourth position with 736 points. Virat and Rohit will aim to improve their rankings in the series against Australia in October this year.

Uncertainty about the future

This improvement in the rankings has come after the BCCI has clearly said that it will not take any hasty decision on the international future of Rohit and Virat. Earlier, media reports claimed that both the players could announce their retirement after the Australia series. However, both have started training for the upcoming challenges. Rohit is training with former Indian assistant coach Abhishek Nair in Mumbai, while Virat Kohli is practicing indoor net sessions.

5 Indians in top 15

India has a total of 5 batsmen in the ODI batting rankings. Apart from Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer is at the 8th position and KL Rahul is at the 15th position. Rohit and Virat last played for India in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Both retired from Test cricket during IPL 2025. Both the players were expected to return in August 2025, but the ODI series against Bangladesh was postponed till next year.
