Possibility of trade
The date of the IPL 2026 mini auction has not been announced yet, and hence the final date of retention will also depend on it. The mega auction takes place every 3 years, while the mini auction is held every year between November and February. The player trade window remains open till a week before the auction, giving CSK and Ashwin enough time to make a decision for the upcoming season.
Ashwin recently hinted about a possible trade during his YouTube interview with Sanju Samson. Meanwhile, the captaincy of the team is also in the headlines. MS Dhoni took over the captaincy mid-season after Rituraj Gaikwad was injured in 2025.
Recently, Dhoni, Gaikwad and other members of the management held strategy meetings in Chennai, in which captaincy and retention of players were discussed. Ashwin has played 221 matches in the IPL so far, in which he has taken 187 wickets. His IPL career economy rate is 7.29.
