Wiaan Mulder on declaring before breaking Brain Lara Record: The second day of the second Test being played between Zimbabwe and South Africa in Bulawayo was much talked about. The big reason for this is the historic innings of Proteas captain Wiaan Mulder, an all-rounder, which could have been even more special, but due to one of his decisions, the cricket world was divided into two factions. Mulder had a chance to break Brian Lara’s record of 400* runs, but he did not do so and declared South Africa’s innings despite being unbeaten on 367 after lunch. Now Mulder has mentioned the unique reason behind his decision.

Wiaan Mulder, who is captaining the second Test against Zimbabwe, scored a double century on the first day of the match. After this, on the second day, he also completed a triple century and became the first player to do so on captaincy debut. When he crossed the 350 run mark, everyone thought that now Mulder would be targeting Brian Lara’s record but this South African player showed a sense of respect and declared the innings.

Why did Wiaan Mulder declare the innings without breaking Brian Lara’s record?

The South African captain revealed the reason behind his decision at the end of the day’s play and said that he left that opportunity out of respect for Lara and a player of that level has the right to keep this record with him. He also said that if such an opportunity comes again, he will do the same again.

After the second day’s play, Mulder said,

“First, I felt we had enough runs and we should bowl. Second, Brian Lara is a legend. It is worthy for someone of that level to maintain that record. If I get a chance to do it again, I will do it in exactly the same way. I spoke to Shukri Conrad (Shuks) and he also felt the same. Brian Lara is a legend and he has the right to maintain that record.”

Let us tell you that Brian Lara played a marathon innings against England in the year 2004 and scored 400 runs by remaining unbeaten in his innings. Since then his record has remained special and Mulder also showed a big heart and allowed it to remain.
