Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Head Coach Andy Flower revealed how smart auction strategy helped his team end the 18-year-long wait and win the IPL title for the first time. RCB won their maiden IPL trophy by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 6 runs in the final of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

After this historic win, Andy Flower explained how their auction strategy laid the foundation for this victory. RCB participated in the mega auction with a purse of Rs 83 crore and spent it wisely to build a strong team.

Flower said in the post-match press conference, “The auction is a huge first step, and it is important to get it as right as possible. Our Director of Cricket Mo Bobat had a core philosophy from the beginning that we should distribute the money equally across the squad rather than spending it on big-name batsmen, who are certainly great players. We understood the importance of building a strong bowling attack from the beginning and worked in that direction.”
He further said, “On the first day of the auction, we faced a bit of criticism—people felt that we were saving money rather than spending it. But this strategy gave us the flexibility to find great value on the second day. We were able to buy players like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Krunal Pandya, Tim David and Romario Shepherd, who all proved to be very important for us. Also, I think our young leg-spinner Suyash Sharma has performed brilliantly this season.”
Talking about Virat Kohli’s performance in IPL 2025, he scored 657 runs in 15 innings of 15 matches at an average of 54.57. During this, his highest score was 73 not out and he scored all these runs at a strike rate of 144.71. A total of 8 half-century innings have been seen from Virat’s bat in this entire season. Due to his excellent performance, RCB was able to perform well this season. Earlier, RCB had managed to reach the finals thrice, but they had to face defeat there.
